Using Biometrics for Student Authentication
Brief Description: Both traditional colleges and universities and online educators are facing increased pressure to comply with the Department of Education’s new ruling in Section 602.17 of the reauthorized Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008 requiring accreditors to monitor steps that colleges take to verify that an enrolled student is the same person who does the course work. This ruling means that it is no longer enough simply to encourage faculty to use programs that detect plagiarism. College administrators must begin to consider how their institution will provide student identity authentication and determine the role faculty will play in this process.
To comply with the upcoming mandate, eduKan worked with Biometric Signature ID to become the first institution in the country to have a biometric authentication system fully integrated into their learning platform. Mark Sarver will discuss how BioSig’s solution allowed eduKan to implement a student ID authentication process that respects student privacy, is delivered at random points in the delivery of course content, is cost effective and provides a positive user experience for students, faculty and administrators. Jeff Maynard, President of Biometric Signature ID, will discuss the technical strategy behind multi-factor authentication (MFA) and its applications in higher education and across all industries requiring identity proofing solutions.
